Flixster is a social media for film enthusiasts. Although I consider myself one, I haven’t been very active using Flixster. Unfortunately, while I’m a movie enthusiast, I don’t have the same enthusiasm for writing movie reviews. Sure, I’ll write every now and then just as I did with Across the Universe, or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, or even Team America. It’s most likely that what I wrote would remain in my blogs, and it’s unlikely for me to transfer it to Flixster.

Flixster’s user-interface can be confusing I think, and its modification flexibility is taken too far, with its sites now resembling the over-glittering MySpace sites. The book review social media site, GoodReads, got it correctly by following Facebook’s lead in design, functionality, and interactivity. As such, there is more likelihood for my book reviews to be posted on the two sites rather than my movie reviews.

I have no plan to retire Flixster just yet. But, I won’t be too terribly active myself. I have put my Flixster link on the Social Media widget.

I have added Multiply link on the Social Media widget. Multiply is another social media network I joined about five years ago. It wasn’t as powerful as it is today. It held a good potential to be a fun and informative social media with relatively easy modification options. Several of my friends had signed at the site as well. But, it never really took off. Perhaps, because it was so slow at that time to upload the site, or perhaps that it was not as flexible as other social media sites, but the network effect has not occurred, at least for me.

Multiply was a late starter in my case, I had joined Friendster and Blogger beforehand. Friendster flew off and I got connected with lots of my friends, before Facebook usurped its throne and connected me with even more people. Blogger, on the other hand, proved to be a robust medium to store and publish my writings, although Wordpress is starting to show similar, if not better, functionality. So, Multiply was left with pretty much nothing, since all my needs have been taken care of by “specialist” social media sites.

I had intended for Multiply to be my educational and Islamic Finance personal sites. Turned out that I have a lot of interests that I want to put in writing, and I haven’t had the time and passion to commit to single topic most of the time. Hence, I have retired Multiply, but I keep it online for archival purposes.

I joined Brazen Careerist couple years ago, on an invitation by its Director of Community, Ryan Paugh.

Brazen Careerist is mainly targeted for professional use, but in a less formal way, combining the best of LinkedIn and Facebook. In sum, a LinkedIn geared for Generation Y. It has not reach tipping point yet, but it’s getting there, although getting international crowds may prove a bit difficult, as it’s not common in the culture to mix work and play.

I think Brazen Careerist has kept up with its innovation, it has quite innovative way to present one’s resume. I have not put the social media site into good use yet, but I can see how I am going to craft a new vitae for myself.

My YouTube channel is a bit barren. I don’t have uploaded videos yet, that is because I’m not a big enthusiast on posting media on the Net (as you may have noticed from my Flickr account). It’s a bit of a hassle for me, which I hope will change in the near future along with my more active involvement in the social media. As for the moment, I use YouTube for aggregating interesting video clips I found in the site (or in another word, an alternative bookmark).

YouTube is platform neutral since you can upload and watch video clips whether you are using Windows or Macs, and even mobile hardwares. Among the options for amateur video uploader sites, YouTube is probably the #1 choice due to its network effect. Since Google acquired it in 2006, its network effect got multiplied thanks to Google’s own massive users.

I found quite a few independent as well as world movies in YouTube, albeit being divided into several pieces due to its own limitation. It might not be long before big studios start using YouTube as a distribution channel. When it happened, it’ll pose serious threat for Netflix and iTunes.

I have put my YouTube channel link on the Social Media widgetized footer area.

I have this personal rule of not posting more than one post in one day. Or so I thought.. I’ve tried looking for that post where I have stated this but yet found none. Well, even if it’s only inside my head, I’ll put it in writing this time.

My personal rule for not posting more than one post in a day is just my way of keeping myself well-paced and balanced. I used to have up to five different posting sites (homepage, Blogspot, Multiply, Earth Street Corner, and an anonymous blog). Those were the days when I was job-hunting and bandwidth crazed. There weren’t categories and tags yet, so each site was meant for different theme. The only exception was applied to the homepage, since the posts were mostly about technical site development rather than essay on certain topic.

I’ve retired Multiply and Earth Street Corner a couple years ago, but still maintain Blogspot and my personal homepage, currently version 3.0.

I’ve kept my meatiest posts on Blogspot, but with Wordpress fully functioning on version 3.0, it might be redundant. I don’t know yet, we’ll see. I’ll keep both open for the moment, until I find sound reasoning saying otherwise. The Single Day, Single Post rule now also applies to version 3.0 for the reason that it’s no longer a site development report, but rather a fully functioning blog.

I joined Digg almost a year ago, end of March 2009. I wasn’t intending to use it like it had been designed to, that is to find out about hot stories alternatively from the mainstream media. Digg was created to collectively uncover most popular sites on the Web, by means of submitting and voting for the best contents. Recently, Digg celebrated its 5-year anniversary.

I had known Digg about four years ago, where a co-worker forwarded me a dugg article about something, which I can’t remember. I got curious about Digg at that time but didn’t pursue it any further. Last year, I decided to join Digg, since I started seeing lots of yellow buttons with the word “digg” on different contents around the Web, and also to feed my curiosity.

I immediately saw Digg as an alternative bookmark site, and a publishing source. I have been using Digg as such ever since.

I have put Digg’s link on my Social Media widget.

After Facebook, my social media with the most contacts would be Friendster. Friendster was quite a boom in the early to mid 2000, with most of its users residing in Asia. Indonesia being the second largest user base, after the Philippines, according to Alexa. Sure, there are still pockets of Friendster user base existing scattered here and there. But, most have migrated to Facebook, for obvious reasons. Facebook has better interactivity, cleaner design, more applications, and wider user base (again, its all about network effect).

But, I guess Friendster still has that nostalgia on it. So, I haven’t erase the account even though I have reduced my visits since 2006. Plus, it still has its uses on occasions (like double-checking profiles or what-not). I have put Friendster social media button in the footer widget.

Facebook is probably the most happening social media today. So, it would be a travesty for me not being in the scene and not including this ultra-popular social media in my widget. Well, there you go, my Facebook link in the Social Media widget.

Facebook happens to be my primary social media as well since most of my friends have Facebook accounts. Friends from kindergarten, middle schools, high school, colleges, workplaces, professional networks, locals, and overseas. At the moment, it is probably my most valuable contact list. I still have some fun on Facebook, answering quizzes and playing games. But mostly, I use Facebook to maintain my network contacts, express my views, and to a lesser extent, build my personal “brand”.

Facebook used to be an exclusively academia community with only those having .edu email address able to register. Now, Facebook is wide open, enabling those with not so legitimate identity with questionable motives to open an account. My niece learned of privacy traps on Facebook the hard way, but that is another story. Although I already put privacy blocks on certain contents, I believe I’ll have to be more vigilant in monitoring my Facebook account nowadays.
